Stulberg Competition Master Class Information and Requirements

The Stulberg Competition will again sponsor master classes in March led by the adjudicators of the 35th annual Stulberg International String Competition.  This year, master classes will be offered for violin, viola, cello, and string quartets and are open to students of the Southwest Michigan area who are under the age of twenty on January 1, 2010.

Master classes will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the Dalton Center on the campus of Western Michigan University.  Each solo performer will spend 30 minutes with the clinician with first performance beginning at 12:30 p.m.; quartets will spend 45 minutes with the clinicians.  The last performance will end at 3:00 p.m.  Classes are open to the public, free of charge.  Judges/teachers featured this year are the members of the renowned Julliard Quartet.

Live auditions will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2009 at the Disciples of Christ - Christian Church, 2208 Winchell Ave. in Kalamazoo.  Applicants are encouraged to perform one movement of a concerto, sonata or other substantial work from the string repertoire (i.e., an unaccompanied work by Bach, Ysaye, Kodaly or Hindemith).  Applicants may perform with or without accompaniment at the audition.  However, if chosen for the master class, a pianist is mandatory for works in which there is an accompaniment.   If requested, the Stulberg Competition will provide an accompanist at the performer’s expense.  Results of the auditions will be sent to applicants via email.  Applicants chosen to perform in the master classes will have the opportunity to perform at an additional venue in the greater Kalamazoo area.  The dates, times and locations are yet to be determined.

Applicants should complete the application form and submit it and the $30 application fee to:
