The Stulberg International String Competition is an equal opportunity organization and is committed to equal rights, equal opportunities and equal protection under the law. Eligibility:

  • The Stulberg Competition is open to students of violin, viola, cello or double bass.
  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2010.
  • Applicants must include a copy of a legal document stating your date of birth

About the Competition:

  • All submitted CDs are reviewed by a panel which will select twelve semifinalists and four alternates.
  • Notification of screening results will be sent out no later than January 12, 2010 by e-mail. A letter will be sent on said date if no e-mail address is available.
  • In addition, results will be posted on the Stulberg website (www.stulberg.org).
  • Twelve semifinalists compete in live, open competition on Saturday, February 27, 2010, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, before a panel of judges and an audience.
  • Semifinalists will perform a required selection of Bach and a movement from a standard concerto.
  • Six finalists will be chosen to perform in the competition finals Saturday evening on February 27, 2010.

2010 Prizes

Burdick-Thorne Gold Medal: $5,000 and a performance to be determined.
Silver Medal: $4,000 and a performance with the Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra.
Pinehurst Bronze Medal: $3,000 and a performance with the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra.
Bach Award:
$500 for best performance of solo Bach selection.

Application Guidelines

  • CD and application form must be postmarked by December 18, 2009.
  • Contestants will only have 25 minutes to perform at the semifinals, including Bach. This means your Bach and piece/movement choice should NOT EXCEED 25 minutes in total time on stage.
  • Only record the piece or COMPLETE movement you will play at the semifinals. If your chosen Bach selection and entire concerto can be performed in the 25 minutes, you may choose a movement from a separate concerto to prepare for the finals. Final performances must NOT EXCEED 15 minutes.
  • Bach should not be recorded on the submitted CD.

CD Requirements

  • No Bach recording on the CD. Only record the piece/movement you will play at the semifinals.
  • The piece/movement must be from standard solo repertoire with a readily available orchestral accompaniment.
  • The piece/movement must be accompanied by piano or orchestra.
  • Cut lengthy tuttis, both in the introduction and in the body of the movement if applicable.
  • DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE CD. DO NOT TALK.
  • Label the selection on your CD including the movement, title, number and composer. We employ a screening system which guarantees fairness through anonymity.
  • All CDs submitted become the property of the Stulberg Competition.

Semifinalists

  • Twelve semifinalists will be chosen. More information will be sent to those selected.
  • Semifinalists must arrive in Kalamazoo by 5:00 PM EST on February 26, 2010.
  • Semifinalists will perform between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, on February 27, 2010.
  • All semifinalists are required to use accompanists provided by the Stulberg International String Competition. (NEW RULE)
  • Accompanist is provided at a nonrefundable fee of $200.00.
  • Accompanist will contact you to arrange your rehearsal time, after assignments have been made by the Stulberg International String Competition.
  • Performances must be from memory.
  • Total time on stage is 25 minutes including Bach.
  • Bach, chosen from the attached list, must be performed first.
  • Semifinalists must perform the piece/movement recorded on the submitted CD; no substitutions.
  • Semifinalists are expected to attend the 4:30 PM ceremony on February 27, following the judges' deliberation.
  • Six finalists will be chosen from the twelve semifinalists.

Finalists

  • Six finalists will perform in recital format.
  • The finals will begin at 8:00 PM on February 27, 2010.
  • Finalists will perform with the same accompanist as in the semifinals.
  • Performances must be from memory.
  • Final performances will NOT EXCEED 15 minutes. The selection must be a different complete movement from the SAME concerto performed at the semifinals. You may perform a movement from a different concerto than that played in the semifinals ONLY IF your chosen concerto was performed in its entirety during the semifinals
  • Bach will not be performed during the finals.

Each semifinalist must perform ONE of the following movements for the daytime semifinals performance.
