Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July, 2010 – Astral Artists, one of the nation’s premier organizations for the career development of exceptional emerging classical musicians, is pleased to announce that violinist Benjamin Beilman captured First Prize at the eminent Montréal International Musical Competition (MIMC), held this year for violinists. Beilman, 20, earned the Competition’s top honors, winning the $30,000 First Prize (plus $20,000 in career development services) as well as its People’s Choice Award, an additional $2,500 prize. MusicalAmerica.com called Beilman’s performances at the Competition “striking” and “impeccable,” adding that he “played with both eloquence and flair.” One of the most prestigious competitions for emerging classical musicians held in the world today, the MIMC holds its Violin competition only every third year, alternating annually with Piano and Voice. Open to violinists of all nationalities who intend to pursue a professional career and who are 29 years old or younger, the rigorous, highly competitive process consisted of four rounds, with the final three rounds occurring live in Montréal from May 24?June 4, 2010 before an international jury and public audience.
The competitors prepared 60?minute recitals for the early rounds (including a compulsory Canadian work commissioned by the MIMC, One for Solitude, by Kelly?Marie Murphy). For the final round, they performed a solo concerto accompanied by the Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Jean?Philippe Tremblay. As a direct result of his success at MIMC, Mr. Beilman has been engaged by Radio France, the Edmonton Symphony, the Festival d’Été du Quebec, I Musici de Montréal, the Montréal Bach Festival, Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, and the Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Yannick Nézet?Séguin. From Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mr. Beilman is a student of Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music and joined the Astral Artists roster as a winner of its 2009 National Auditions.
